MTN8 setback helped United in Nedbank Cup – Davids

Maritzburg United lost to SuperSport United in the MTN8 semifinals earlier this season.

The experience that Fadlu Davids and his Team of Choice side acquired when they reached the semifinals of the MTN8 and lost to eventual champions SuperSport United, has helped the Team of Choice to reach their maiden top flight cup final after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 in the semis.

“I am proud of the players, they took it really hard losing in the semifinal and that was the experience. We had to learn and we went through our eight games without winning after that semifinal match because we were never really able to handle the disappointment and that is how we learnt from that situation,” said Davids.

United have set up a Nedbank Cup final against Free State Stars on May 19 in the Mother City, and Davids ranks Ea Lla Koto as a big team.

“They are a big team, their log position does not lie, they are a great team. We have to approach each game like a big team because any team in the PSL can beat you,” he said.

“It is easy to drop your head especially against a quality side but they kept cool heads and kept their structure with or without the ball. I am really proud of them but we can’t be celebrating because we have league games on Wednesday and on Saturday,” he added.
