Motale wants to see Pirates back in African competitions

Pirates, together with Mamelodi Sundowns are the only Southern Africa sides to have won the Champions League, with Pirates’ triumph tracing as far back as 23 years ago, while Masandawana lifted the title in 2016.

Motale was the captain when ‘EzikaMagebula’ won the coveted title in 1995, and he says it is time for Bucs to return to the continental stage.

“We know that when Pirates are playing in the continent, they always go all out and wholeheartedly and their games are always entertaining,” he told Phakaaathi.

“The likes of TP Mazembe, Zamalek and the other powerhouses of the continent know that when Pirates are coming, they need to pull up their socks and double their efforts. That is one factor that I like about Pirates,” he added.

Pirates last appearance in the Champions League and the Confed’ Cup came in 2013 and 2015 respectively where they succumbed in both finals.

“Pirates don’t just go there to increase numbers, they take it seriously and that also put South Africa on the map and it also helps the national team to be stronger like we see with Sundowns – most of their players are selected for the national side,” said Motale.
