Pirates set to release Mthiyane in January

Phakaaathi has learnt that Orlando Pirates are set to offload defender Nkosinathi Mthiyane during the January transfer period.

The 29-year-old left back has found game time hard to come by at Bucs since coming back from a loan spell at Golden Arrows at the beginning of the season.

He has been playing for the Pirates reserve team in the Multichoice Diski Challenge ever since.

Now a source close to Pirates says Mthiyane will be offloaded in January.

“Mthiyane is in the position where [Patrick] Phungwayo was before he left Pirates to join Free State Stars. There’s just too much quality in that left back position, so there’s just no place for him,” said the source.

“Pirates were hoping that Arrows will keep him for one more season, but they did not take up that option hence he’s playing in the reserve league.”

Mthiyane joined Pirates from Chippa United in June last year. He was then loaned out to Arrows in January this year.

The left back has also played for AmaZulu and Thanda Royal Zulu in his career.
