Orlando Pirates have not given up in their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC left winger Fawaaz Basadien.

]Stellies have been reluctant to part with the talented player. Basadien also attracted interest from Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs before the season started.

Pirates Maela doubt

The Buccaneers are believed to be targeting the 28-year-old to strengthen the left side of their team. No decision has been made on club captain Innocent Maela, whose contract is reportedly coming to an end in June.

Basadien is seen as an important addition that could strengthen Pirates’ defence ahead of next season. If Pirates have their way, Basadien will join former teammate Deano van Rooyen. Van Rooyen also moved from Stellies to the Sea Robbers.

Phakaaathi understands that Basadien, who has broken into the Bafana Bafana team, will not come cheap. He has played a pivotal role in Stellenbosch’s run to the quarterfinal stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

“It has been easy for Basadien because he’s keen on trying out a new experience at a bigger club but he has remained professional even though the club didn’t accept any offers for him this season,” a source close to the club said.

‘No agreement reached’

“Chiefs interest was serious but there was no agreement reached between the two clubs and now it looks like Pirates are coming in strong for him. Don’t be surprised to see him join them when the season ends but you never know in football because things change very quickly and other clubs might come knocking as well.”
