Motaung family divided on Chiefs coach’s future – source

Word coming out of the Kaizer Chiefs camp is that the Motaung family is divided on whether or not to axe coach Ernst Middendorp.

According to a source, some members of the Motaung family feel that the coach should be fired after a poor season that saw Chiefs finish ninth, while other say he should be given another chance.

“The issue surrounding Middendorp started before he was appointed. There were some members of the Motaung family who did not want him to return to the clubs, but after Kaizer (Motaung) intervened, a compromise was reached for him to come back,” said the source.

“Now the same members are asking Kaizer to pull the trigger, saying that Chiefs have not improved, instead have gotten worse under Middendorp. Then, there’s another group that says that things have improved under him and he should be given at least a full season to prove his worth.

“The decision now lies with Kaizer and the board. At this stage, it is anybody’s guess as to what would happen to Middendorp. It’s a touch and go. He could stay and he could also be sacked,” added the source.

Middendorp joined Chiefs in December last year after the club sacked Giovanni Solinas.

Chiefs finished ninth and lost to National First Division side TS Galaxy in the final of the Nedbank Cup.
