Josephs set to leave Wits – Ajax next?

Phakaaathi has learnt that Moeneeb Josephs is set to leave Bidvest Wits at the end of the season and move back to Cape Town to rejoin Ajax Cape Town.

Josephs’ contract with Wits is set to expire at the June, and talks over a new contract have been suspended until the end of the season. .

“Wits have offered Moeneeb a one-year contract, and he wants more than that. He wants a longer contract because he believes that at 36, that could be his last contract. That’s why the contract negotiations have stalled,” said a Phakaaathi source.

“Another thing, Moeneeb is considering finishing his football career in Cape Town, where it all started for him. He wants to go back to Ajax, but that would depend if Ajax are keen to sign him,” added the source.

Josephs started his football career at Cape Town Spurs before moving to Ajax in 1999.

After spending seven years with the Urban Warriors, he joined Wits in 2006.

He left Wits and moved to Orlando Pirates in 2008 and rejoined the Clever Boys again in 2013 after spending five years at Bucs.

He had been a regular starter at the Clever Boys until he lost his spot to Darren Keet in September last year.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper has regained his starting berth, having started in Wits last three games against Al Ahly (two legs of Caf Champions League) and Chippa United.
