A source has revealed that Pirates are keen to have him back as part of their technical team again because he did well while he was in charge of the MDC team.

Maahier Davids may make a return to Orlando Pirates’ Diski Challenge team after he was fired by St George’s FC in Ethiopia, where he had been head coach for a few months.

Maahier, who is Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids’ brother, had joined the Ethiopian giants as Ernst Middendorp’s assistant last year, but the German mentor left the club when Maritzburg United sent an SOS call to him.

A source has revealed that Pirates are keen to have him back as part of their technical team again because he did well while he was in charge of the MDC team, with a few players promoted to the senior team for the first time in a while.

“He was doing well and he didn’t leave on bad terms. He had a great chance to grow as a coach and he got the club’s blessing to take it up. During his time here, the Bophelas (Wandile and Andile) were promoted, as were Azola Tshobeni and Thabo Monyane,” said the source.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, veteran goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane is said to be on his way out of Pirates at the end of the season.

Mpontshane’s current deal will reach its expiry date this coming June and Phakaaathi has been led to believe that the club are not keen on extending his deal.

The 34-year-old has only played one league game this season as Richard Ofori and Wayne Sandilands have been the preferred choices in goal.
