Chiefs target AmaZulu defender

'They will be able to make their interest public in January, when he is in the last six months of his contract at Usuthu,' said a source.

Kaizer Chiefs are said to have set their sights on AmaZulu defender Thembela Sikhakhane, whose contract expires in June next year.

The right back is however, is also said to be willing to stay on at Usuthu should the club give him an improved offer.

He will be free to speak to any team in January should AmaZulu continue to drag their feet on his contract talks.

A source says Usuthu are yet to open the negotiations,  despite Sikhakhane giving him details of his new manager.

“He left the company that managed him before and is now managed by his brother and he let the club know of this.

“He did this to avoid any misunderstanding or miscommunication where the club could end up approaching his old manager.

“Now it has been weeks since he gave them the numbers but no communication has been made,” says the source.

Sikhakhane is, however, not worried because he is not short of potential suitors should Usuthu decide against extending his contract.

The source said Kaizer Chiefs are one of the teams who have keen interest and are following developments in his contract issue.

“Chiefs and Royal AM are the two teams we know are watching the situation with a keen eye right now.

“And they will be able to make their interest public in January, when he is in the last six months of his contract at Usuthu.”

The 29-year-old Sikhakhane previously played for Orlando Pirates and was loaned out to Usuthu while he was doing well.

At the end of his contract with Pirates, he signed with Usuthu permanently.
