Chiefs set to axe Komphela after cup exit?

Word coming out of the Kaizer Chiefs is that the club is set to fire coach Steve Komphela after Amakhosi were knocked out of the Telkom Knockout by Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

Chiefs’ exit from the league cup means the team’s trophy drought continues, having last won a trophy in 2014 when they won the MTN8.

Now a source close to the club told Phakaaathi that Chiefs want to cut ties with Komphela.

“They have given up on winning any trophy with Komphela. The boss [Kaizer Motaung] is not happy with how things have gone so far under Komphela. He has been supporting Komphela until now, but now he is doubting that Chiefs will win anything under Komphela,” said the source.

Former Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral has been linked with a return to the club, but the Turkish coach has denied these rumours, saying he would not backstab Komphela.

Chiefs’ next game is against AmaZulu away in Durban on Wednesday night.
