A Phakaaathi source said Komphela is Baxter’s preferred candidate and he even tried to lure him to Bafana but Komphela felt he had to honour his contract at Amakhosi.
“He has been stalling in appointing his assistant and he pledged when he took over that one of his duties will be to groom a local coach who will take over when his time ends. They have always had a cordial relationship and have a similar philosophy,” said the source.
Komphela’s contract with Chiefs is set to expire at the end of the season and word is that Amakhosi have already begun search for a new coach.
Free State Stars coach Luc Eymael has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Komphela.
