Mbesuma set to get SA citizenship

Phakaaathi has it on good authority that striker Collins Mbesuma is in the process of receiving his South African citizenship.

The Zambian by birth is still without a club after parting ways with Highlands Park at the end of last season when the Lions of the North were relegated from the Absa Premiership to the National First Division.

“Collins will get his South African citizenship very soon,” his agent Mike Makaab told Phakaaathi.

The PSL allows each team to register five foreign players at any one time, but with Mbesuma having spent over five years in the country, he is eligible to become a naturalized citizen.

Other players who are naturalized citizens include Mamelodi Sundowns trio Anthony Laffor, Khama Billiat and Denis Onyango.

“Once that is done we are sure that will open up host of opportunities for him to find a team in the top flight,” Makaab said.

The Prosport International agent has revealed that there are clubs already keen on adding the seasoned striker into their arsenal of forwards.

“There are clubs who have shown interest but unfortunately the majority of the clubs have got their foreigners sorted out. As we know, Collins is highly rated and well respected so we just hope that with the pending citizenship coming through, it will open a lot of doors for him,” Makaab concluded.

Mbesuma has played for the top three sides in the country – Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs – along with other sides like Golden Arrows, the fallen Moroka Swallows and the now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces.
