Mathoho ends 11-year stay at Kaizer Chiefs

Erick Mathoho has parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs after spending eleven seasons with the Soweto giants.

This comes after Chiefs opted against renewing the 33-year-old defender’s contract which was set to expire at the end of the season.

Amakhosi announced on Thursday that “Tower”, as Mathoho is affectionately known in football circles that he is leaving the club.

“One of Kaizer Chiefs’ longest-serving players, Mulomowandau Erick Mathoho, will sadly leave the club as we conclude the 2022-23 DStv Premiership season,” read a statement from Chiefs.

“Mathoho, 33, joined Chiefs in July 2012 as a 22-year-old from Bloemfontein Celtic, where he spent three seasons.

“Mathoho featured 267 times (256 starts + 11 substitute appearances) in official matches for Chiefs, scoring 22 goals in 11 seasons.

“He played 26 matches in his maiden season (2012/13) and helped the Amakhosi win the league championship and Nedbank Cup double.

“He was part of the team that won the MTN8 and the league trophy in 2014/15, and was there when Chiefs won the silver medal in the CAF Champions League in 2021.”

Chiefs chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung said: “We are happy that the man from Tshiombo in Limpopo realised his dream of donning the Gold & Black jersey of the team he supported from childhood. It’s not everyone who realises this dream.

“Erick now joins our long list of Kaizer Chiefs legends who served the club and its supporters with aplomb over the last 53 years and he will always be welcomed at the Kaizer Chiefs Village.”

Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr added: “Tower’s contribution is well documented and we will miss him in the team. I got to play in the same team with him for two seasons and he has represented his home village and Kaizer Chiefs very well. His family and community can only be proud of him.”
