Masilela reveals what’s bothering him at Chiefs

Since Masilela’s injury, Philani Zulu has taken the left wingback position and made it his own, but whether Masilela can win his place back in the side isn’t of too much concern to the 32-year-old former Bafana Bafana player, who is now back in training.

“It doesn’t worry me at all. What worries me is that we haven’t won a trophy for the past two seasons and this season I am one person, maybe I am at an age where I put the team first.”

Like his coach Steve Komphela, Masilela believes Chiefs have a winning culture and their fans are spoiled in that they are used to celebrating a trophy or two each season. Before Komphela arrived, Chiefs won two league titles, a Nedbank Cup and an MTN8 in three seasons under Stuart Baxter.

“It is a bit weird (not winning). Once you win and you get that taste you want it over and over again, but it happens. You just have to soldier on and hopefully we can get one or two before the end of the season.”

There have been rumours that Masilela’s time at the club is coming to an end, with his contract expiring at the end of the season and with Zulu doing well, while there is also young Siphosakhe Ntiyantiya waiting for another chance, having impressed on his debut a few weeks ago.

“Since I started playing football there has always been competition. Zulu is doing well and there is still Sibusiso Khumalo and Ntiyantiya. I just want to be fit and available for selection and we will see from there,” said Masilela.
