In its 20th year, the tournament ran from December last year until January this year and was sponsored by Spanish football league La Liga to intensify the interest and promote grassroots level football. However, the winning team is disappointed with the organisers for failing to pay up the prize money after they were promised to get it after 14 working days after beating Meadowlands All Stars 2-0 in the final.
“We have been waiting for our prize money for a while now and the organisers have been taking us backwards and forward when asking when we will receive it,” said Eagles captain Moffat Mdluli, who has played for the likes of Polokwane City and SuperSport United.
“We are all puzzled about the delay of the money because we were told that we will get it after 14 working days, but we are still waiting.”
Tournament organiser Dlongolo Ntenjwa confirmed that the team was yet to receive their money, but he stated that it was Eagles fault for taking too long to give them documents, which included banking details of the club.
“I spoke with the club and told them to give us the correct banking details because the sponsors did not want to transfer the money into the wrong account,” said Ntenjwa.
“Everything is sorted now, and the money is being processed as we speak. They should get it sometime this week.”
The competition is popularly known to have produced many professional footballers in the past like Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala, Thuso Phala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane of SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits midfielder Sifiso Myeni, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Teko Modise of Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as former Baroka FC player Tshepo Matete.
