Komphela hopes to end long cup drought

Golden Arrows have not won a trophy since their record 6-0 MTN8 triumph over Ajax Cape Town a decade ago but they have positioned themselves well to get their hands on some silverware this season.

Abafana Bes’thende have set up a Nedbank Cup semifinal against TS Galaxy after beating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 over the weekend.

Komphela knows that the idea of guiding Arrows towards winning another trophy is almost a reality, but is he focusing much on that?

“Not really,” Komphela said.

“I focus more on the process in the same way I have worked at Celtic … I want to develop a team who are a project where you are looking at the process and the performance will assist you to get the outcome. When you get results like these you go back and reflect and look at the positives and look at how far we are in terms of where we want to be,” Komphela added.

His counterpart Lehlohonolo Seema said he felt “sorry” for his players because they prepared well for Abafana Bes’thende e but had committed the same mistakes from previous games.

“I feel sorry for them because we worked hard and we have worked hard but unfortunately if we don’t concentrate until the last minute we are going to suffer from things that we know. It is like knowing something is hot but you still put your hands there knowing you will get burnt,” Seema said.

However, the former Orlando Pirates skipper said he has shifted the focus towards qualifying for next season’s MTN8.

“We have to move on and there is a bigger task in front of us and we have to make sure we stay in the top eight come the end of the season and what a way to resume that journey against Maritzburg United on Friday.

“We are out of the cup and that is all I can say. It is tough luck to the supporters and we are sorry about that but we will continue fighting … and make sure we get into the top eight.”
