Komphela explains Gordinho’s substitution

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has explained why he took off Lorenzo Gordinho during Amakhosi’s 2-1 loss to SuperSport United.

Komphela caused a stir when he took out the centre back and replaced him with Daniel Cardoso while Chiefs were reduced to 10 men.

Chiefs finished the game with 10 men after Eric Mathoho was shown a red card in as early as the sixth minute following a professional foul against Bradley Grobler.

“The decision we took, it looked crazy because you suffer a centre back and you’re taking out a centre back. Somebody who is sitting there will be thinking, this guy is crazy, but at the end, it came out to be the right decision,” Komphela told SuperSport TV after the game.

“The logic was that, one, if you compromise any one of the offensive players – let’s say you take out a Pule [Ekstein], Parker or Shabba [Tshabalala] – you’re minimising your strength going forward, and the mistake was, centrally we were not as tight.

“So we bring in Katsande, it got quiet, we had chances, so the decision we took was right.”
