Komphela details Arrows’ ‘proper football’ style

Golden Arrows are not a counter attacking team, nor are they a possession-based team and they are certainly not a defensive side, according to coach Steve Komphela.

Komphela says he sets up his team in order to counter the opposition’s strength and break their rhythm.

The tactically astute Komphela, who is largely credited for Bloemfontein Celtic’s improved style of play where he was their mentor for about six months last year, has described Abafana Bes’thende’s way of playing as “proper football”.

“We play a game according to its demands. We don’t play a defensive game, we don’t play an offensive game. When it is time for us to defend we defend properly and when it is time for us to attack we attack properly. Even when defending, you must know how to defend and when, even in attack, you must know how you attack and how you structure your attacking midfield,” said the former Kaizer Chiefs coach.

He added: “Arrows is playing more of a proper complete game, we are not a counter attacking team and we are not a possession-based only team, we attack. When you come at us and we get the ball and you are open, we hit and if you close, we keep position to penetrate, that’s how we play.”

Komphela’s “proper football” will have to come to effect this Sunday in the KwaZulu-Natal derby when Arrows host Cavin Johnson’s AmaZulu at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
