Khune pays tribute to Arthur Bartman

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune says Arthur Bartman was a selfless humble soul.

Bartman died in March after he was admitted to hospital in February with meningitis.

Khune says Bartman was helpful to him while he was a youngster at Chiefs.

Bartman and Khune were Chiefs’ first and second choice goalkeepers, respectively, before the deceased took up a goalkeeping job at Maritzburg United when he retired.

“He was selfless in everything. There were times when Rainer Dinkelacker (ex-Chiefs goalkeeper coach) wouldn’t come to work but he would take over the goalkeeper coach duties on the day and train us. He would make us better goalkeepers,’’ said Khune at Bartman’s memorial service in at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Tuesday.

Bartman played football for 20 years, winning the Rothmans Cup with Chiefs when he first joined the club in 1997-2000. The 49-year-old was later recalled to the club in the mid-2000s to add experience to the club’s goalkeeping department, sharing the workload with Khune.
