Kaizer Chiefs release goalkeeper Vries

Phakaaathi reported earlier that Vries was on his way out of Chiefs and Amakhosi have now confirmed that they have terminated the goalkeeper’s contract.

The Namibian international becomes the fourth player to be released by Chiefs, following the termination of contracts of midfielders Hendrick Ekstein and Khotso Malope and striker Gustavo Paez.

“Kaizer Chiefs continued with the process of closing off the season with an announcement of goalkeeper Virgil Vries leaving the club.

“The club confirmed that negotiations with the Namibian goalminder were concluded on Tuesday afternoon… Virgil Vries joined Chiefs on 1 July 2018 and with immediate effect (30 April) entered into a mutual termination and release agreement.

“The club thanked Vries for his contribution and wished him all the best in his future endeavours as he prepares for the upcoming Cosafa and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments with the Namibian national team,” read a statement from Chiefs.

The 29-year-old played just five Absa Premiership games, and lasted less than one year of the three-year contract that he signed at the start of the season.
