Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs killed in hijacking


Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs has passed away after being shot during a hijacking in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

According to police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, the 24-year-old was fatally shot at a petrol station while awaiting assistance.

The two armed suspects approached him and instructed him to get out of his car and shot him in the upper body.

Fleurs was rushed to the nearest medical care centre, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Masondo confirmed.

One of the suspects fled the scene with Fleurs’ vehicle.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and opened cases of murder and car hijacking.

No arrests have been made.

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Luke Fleurs’ death on Thursday morning, sending condolences to his loved ones.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” said the club.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Condolences have been pouring in following the news of Fleurs’ untimely death.

“I am saddened by the passing of Kaizer Chiefs defender and former junior international Luke Fleurs. I am saddened that yet another life has been cut short due to violent crime. My thoughts are with the Fleurs and Amakhosi family, and the entire South African football fraternity,” said Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs. Our deepest sympathies go out to Fleurs’ family, friends, and the broader South African football community during this difficult time,” said Cape Town City on Thursday.
