Hunt walking a tightrope at Wits

The reigning league champions are in serious relegation trouble, bottom of the table at the halfway stage of the campaign, and head coach Gavin Hunt’s position has to be under some scrutiny, whatever his previous successes.

The Clever Boys did lift the Telkom Knockout title this season, but in the league it has been one catastrophe after another – Wits have already lost two more games than they did in the whole of last season.

Whatever Hunt says, mistakes were clearly made in the transfer market ahead of the new campaign, with big-name signings like Steven Pienaar and Daylon Claasen failing to make any sort of impression.

Pienaar has already left the club, and Wits went back into the market this month, picking up the likes of Lehlohonolo Majoro and Edwin Gyimah, while bringing Sifiso Myeni back from a loan spell at SuperSport.

This experienced trio all started Friday night’s game but it was the same old story for Hunt, with a goal from Stars’ Thamsanqa Teyise enough to lift Luc Eymael’s side up to third in the table.
