Hunt: SuperSport deserve to finish ahead of Soweto giants

'We are the best after Sundowns,' said Hunt.

The race to finish second in the DStv Premiership has never been quite as exciting as it is this season, given that Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are in the running together with SuperSport United.

Matsatsantsa A Pitori made it somewhat easier for the Soweto duo after they were held to a goalless draw by Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night.

SuperSport head coach Gavin Hunt is of the view that his Spartans have every right to finish as runners-up, suggesting that they are miles ahead of Amakhosi and the Buccaneers.

“We deserve to be second because we are the best after Sundowns, we were seven points clear at one stage and we just have not taken our chances in the last three or four games and it is what it is,” said Hunt.

SuperSport missed a glorious chance to get the three points against Gallants as Bradley Grobler missed a penalty and Hunt feels his side should have won the match regardless.

“Before the penalty we had many chances and that is slightly unjust. But we have to work harder and stick together because we are doing well with what we have,” said Hunt.

“We were well ahead three games ago and we have made it harder for ourselves. We played a game against Chippa United and we should have won by four or five goals.”

Grobler miss

While it was not a glittering display from either side, SuperSport did have a couple of meaningful attempts but the biggest chance was fluffed by strike Grobler in the dying moments of the game. Grobler, who had a chance to add to his 10 league goals, took a penalty but could not keep his effort on target as he ballooned it over the crossbar.

“We tried to chase and win the game, they were under pressure and we were around them so many times, you can say what you like but if you don’t score, it does not matter,” added Hunt.

“I have been doing this thing for 40 years so I know that these things happen in football. It was not our best performance but we should have won the game comfortably. We had some great moments and great opportunities.”
