Hunt left disappointed after SuperSport’s cup exit

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt struggled to put into words why his team failed to show up in the crushing 4-1 defeat to Polokwane City in Sunday’s Carling Knockout last-16 clash.

City were already cruising at 4-0 up when Terrence Dzvukamanja scored United’s consolation goal with two minutes left to play.

Hunt, who was understandably upset with the result, couldn’t put a finger on how they lost the match against the newly-promoted team as he addressed the media.

“We had a lot of chances but every time they broke out they scored. So we didn’t defend well enough. We have to defend better and we didn’t,” Hunt said when he was asked about his team’s below-par performance.

“We’re not blessed with a lot of players when we lose one or two, but we can’t make excuses like that. If they (players) are under contract, they should be better and they weren’t. We were out-muscled and that’s not good enough for me.”

Matsatsantsa a Pitori simply didn’t have answers on the pitch. Rise and Shine used the counter-attack to devastating effect to qualify for the quarterfinals, where they have been drawn against Stellenbosch FC.

“Collectively, we weren’t good enough and there are lot of things that we need to get right,” Hunt said.

“We could have been 3-0 up ourselves before they scored, but that’s football (because) most of their goals were turnover balls. The second one was a killer goal before the break.”

United will next play Royal AM in the DStv Premiership.
