Highlands Park turns down R10m for Mvala
Coach Owen Da Gama says his 24-year-old striker is worth more than R10-million which was put on the table by a club he refused to name.

Owen Da Gama made a stinging revelation when he told members of the media that an Absa Premiership club wanted to snatch one of the league’s top goal scorer, Mothobi Mvala, for R10-million, but he turned them down.
Da Gama said his 24-year-old striker is worth more than R10-million which was put on the table by a club he refused to name.
“Highlands Park is not a selling team. A team offered us R10-million for Mothobi and we refused. He is worth more than R10-million,” said Da Gama.
“All these players have got two or more years in their contracts and nobody is going to touch these players because we want to achieve something. You can’t keep building players for other teams. We did that in the past but we are building the team,” he added.
While they are not willing to sell their players locally, Da Gama says should offers come from abroad, they are most likely to enter into negotiations.
“What the club is looking at is if there are opportunities to go overseas, then you talk. You can’t lighten yourself just to strengthen another team just for money. I just think if you want to achieve something, you’ve got to keep your players.”
Mvala currently sits a goal behind Black Leopards’ Mwape Musonda in the golden boot race with seven goals. That is deemed as low in some sections of the footballing corridors. However, Da Gama has criticized other prolific strikers for not coming to the party.
“If that is disappointing, what about the other players? What about Jeremy Brockie who they paid R8-million for? How many has he scored? Sorry, let’s be realistic… there are other big players who are not even scoring five goals,” said Da Gama.
