Good news for Sundowns coming from the casualty ward

'His injury has been worrying us because we were all very excited with his performances,' said Downs coach Manqoba Mngqithi

The absence of Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena has forced Mamelodi Sundowns coaches to use Lyle Lakay as a makeshift right winger-back as they do not have a natural right-footed player who can slot in their right hand side of defence. Mudau had a fine start to the new season, having played two games in the DStv Premiership and one in the MTN8.

All indications were – given his solid display – that he would be an integral part of Downs’ well-oiled machine, particularly at the back where they are still without blemish in the league as they have gone half a dozen of games without conceding a single goal.

Mudau’s progress, however, has been dealt with a blow when he was stretchered off in a league game against Chippa United over a month ago, and his coach, Manqoba Mngqithi says the player is recovering well and is expected to make his comeback soon.

“His injury has been worrying us because we were all very excited with his performances, he was outstanding in the first two matches that he played. The big game for him was the one against Kaizer Chiefs… I think he played very well in that space and unfortunately he had his hamstring diagnosis and it is a grade one injury,” said Mngqithi.

“He came back and he still felt something so we said ‘let’s not risk him because we will still need him’. At this stage I cannot say [for certain] when we are going to have him back but it is probably going to be after the Fifa break he might be back in the team,” he added.
