Former Pirates midfielder dies

Former Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows midfielder Bheka Phakathi has died in a car crash in KwaZulu-Natal.


According to Phakaaathi sources the 34-year-old died in a car accident on Sunday morning when he was on his way from Greytown to home in Durban.

“It was on the road between Greytown and Pietermaritzburg. It is sad news. He had just guided Umvoti FC for the play-offs,” said a source.

Umvoti were confirmed as KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League champions on Saturday.

Phakathi played for Pirates between 2002 and 2005 before rejoining Arrows where he had started his professional career in the late 1990s. He retired in 2007 and started his coaching career at Abafana Bes’thende juniors.

He was generally considered a future coach.
