FNB Stadium stampede inquest docket opened

Two football fans lost their lives during a stampede at the FNB Stadium ahead of the Carling Black Label Champions Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

A third person was hospitalised in critical condition, but was later taken out of the Intensive care unit (ICU) and is said to be stable condition.

According to SMSA, fans tried to force their way into the stadium through the emergency gate.

It is alleged that some fans were carrying fake tickets and when their tickets couldn’t scan they became impatient  and tried to force their way into the stadium.

“SAPS have confirmed that an inquest docket has already been opened,” read a statement released by SMSA.

“From a Stadium Management South Africa perspective, we are deeply shocked by the tragic events of yesterday [Saturday] and our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the deceased and those who have been injured.”
