Family reveals Arthur Bartman’s cause of death

Bartman died at the age of 46 this week.

His family has released a statement thanking the South African football public for their support and calling for there to be awareness about the condition.

The family statement:

The Bartman Family are most grateful and so overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support received by so many. The Family is deeply saddened by the loss of a great Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, great friend and soccer legend.”

Arthur was diagnosed with meningitis in November 2018 in Pietermaritzburg and came home to East London in December to recover. He was doing well up until January but suffered a relapse on the 22′ of February and was readmitted to East London Private (Life) Hospital. He sadly succumbed to his battle against meningitis on the eve of Tuesday 19th March 2019.”

The Bartman Family wishes to thank the soccer-loving fans, the teammates of Arthur, Prosport International, the various PSL clubs, the Amakhosi Family and Maritzburg United for the beautiful tributes to Arthur, and the various displays of support being extended to the family during our time of deep grief.

We urge for more awareness and recognition of the battle against meningitis through the display of the burgundy ribbon.
