That the performance was better than compared to previous games will not matter much as more calls for Stuart Baxter to step down as Kaizer Chiefs coach gained more momentum on Saturday.
In fact, the calls have more momentum than the team currently on a backwards trajectory – at least results-wise. The Naturena side was saved from a defeat by a controversial last-minute penalty scored by Keagan Dolly.
Referee Jelly Chavani had initially not given the spot-kick after an AmaZulu player played the ball with his shoulder. But after consultation with his assistant, he changed his mind and gave the spot-kick to Chiefs.
Dolly converted from the spot to equalise for Chiefs after Luvuyo Memela had given AmaZulu the lead earlier on.
The game started slow with the field looking a bit heavy after the rainfall, but as the match wore on it picked up.
It was chance after the other as both sides really pushed forward and while there were times they managed to bypass the defence, the goalkeepers were alert to the danger and made some important saves.
Two minutes after the break however, Daniel Akpeyi was beaten. Luvuyo Memela was set through on goal as Usuthu went on a quick counter and he easily sliced the ball beneath an advancing Akpeyi and into the back of the net.
Seven minutes later, Memela had another chance in a similar situation but this time Akpeyi came out tops with a good save.
Meanwhile, in the other DStv Premiership games played on Saturday afternoon, Sekhukhune United edged TS Galaxy 1-0 away at Mbombela Stadium, while SuperSport United held Chippa United to a goalless draw in Gqeberha.
