Did Chiefs block Khune from joining Bafana’s Afcon squad?

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter has suggested that Itumeleng Khune should be part of the Bafana Bafana squad set to travel to Egypt to represent the country at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Khune was ruled out for the rest of the season after he injured his shoulder before the festive break.

Lee, the son of Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, says Khune has recovered and should have been given the clear to join the Bafana Bafana squad.

“Khune worked hard. He was given a program that will have him ready to play by the start of the season,” Lee Baxter was quoted by as saying by Isolezwe. “He is working with the conditioning team to get ready for next season.”

“Regarding joining Bafana Bafana for the Afcon, if it was up to me I would have him in the Afcon squad but I don’t have the power to make those kind of decision.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Chiefs did not want Khune to join the Bafana Bafana squad shortly after he recovered from his injury because they feared that it jeopardise his chances of playing next season.
