Davids calls for live broadcast of relegation games in PSL

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has suggested that something sinister is happening regarding the refereeing in the DStv Premiership, especially towards the end of the season.

Refereeing has been a thorn in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season but Davids suggests it is now even worse. 

Speaking to the media after their 1-0 loss away to Sekhukhune United, Davids called for all games involving relegation-threatened teams be televised. 

Maritzburg finished the Sekhukhune game with 10 men after Bradley Cross was sent off. They also had six yellow card cautions issued against them.

This is perhaps why Davids believes that televising these games could curb instances of refereeing that are untoward and beneficial to certain teams.

“We really plead that matches like this are televised, especially those of teams in the relegation fight,” Davids is quoted as saying by iDiskiTimes. 

“A lot of things are happening here and we have to have a clear eye on these types of games.

“That is the first step to keep an eye on all these relegation fight games and the next point is that we need to play hard in the league,” added Davids.

‘We will fight against all odds’

The loss against Sekhukhune pushed Maritzburg to the bottom of the standings with five games to the end. 

They are equal on points with Marumo Gallangs who are above them on goal difference.

Davids says they now have their backs against the wall and will have to fight for their survival. 

“Besides that (the bad refereeing), we will be back… We will be fighting, we will be pushing in our next game.

“We will fight against all odds, against external factors we will go and we will push our heads up. 

“And we will fight. Come our home game against Richards Bay, we will roll up our sleeves and fight.” 

Meanwhile, Davids will have a full week to work on his team as their next game is on 21 April against Richards Bay at home. 

After that they travel to Dobsonville Stadium to meet another relegation candidate in Swallows FC. 

On 3 May, Davids’ side will be away to meet yet another relegation side in Gallants. 

They then play Stellenbosch FC at home on May 13 before closing up this season against champions Mamelodi Sundowns on 20 May.
