Comparing PSL teams to cars – Part One

This question arose amid recent debates about Absa Premiership teams who are considered big teams losing their status over the past few years.

The Phakaaathi crew thought of compiling a list where we compare the teams with popular car brands.

Kaizer Chiefs = BMW 325is
A vintage but still commands a lot of respect and is hugely admired for its former glory. Can compete with the newer models in terms of speed but you can never be sure for how long and far it can go. But the worry is that it has aged and no longer as reliable as it used to be. Finding new spares is proving a drag because they are either too expensive or unavailable at all. You have to then import pirate parts to keep it moving.

SuperSport United = Toyota Fortuner
It is strong, reliable and consistent. It is respectable because of its recent achievements but has never really lived up to its real billing. It has recently been improved to catch up to its rivals in terms of appeal and class. The jury is still out on whether the new reinforcements will be as profitable as anticipated.

Chippa United = Ford Kuga
It is very attractive and a new player in its category. It has proved to be a good bet for money but has a tendency of just burning out unexpectedly which has scared off potential fans. It can be the talk of the town one minute, and the laughing stock the next.

Platinum Stars = Landwind
It has been hugely marketed as an option to the Land Rover, with similar specs but it is just not taking off. Has had its moments in the sunshine and enjoyed some glory with the media frenzy it caused but it has been short lived and struggled afterwards to establish itself.

Maritzburg United = Toyota Corrolla
It is reliable and recently been improved to be more attractive. Does well but never really stands out with any achievements. Those who have them swear by them. It has potential to do much better but seems comfortable in its current position.

Cape Town City = VW Golf VII
The PSL’s Vrrrrr Pha! It is fresh, new, stylish and speedy but dangerous at the same time. While some have welcomed it and said it is the future, some are still sceptical. There are those who feel jealous because it is here to steal their people.
