Comitis threatens to take City out of Cape Town

John Comitis says he has no venue for Cape Town City’s Absa Premiership home game against Baroka FC on November 22, hammering the City’s authorities for a failure to assist his team.

“Maybe we will end up playing it (the game) at Baroka, that is the only way I can make a statement to the City,” said Comitis on Wednesday.

The City FC owner is clearly furious with the City of Cape Town, who he feels are not giving his club enough access to their regular home ground, Cape Town Stadium.

“The entire stadium is booked out for events except football during the festive season. At the end of the day, it is a football stadium, and we are not able to book it,” added Comitis.

The Baroka game was originally scheduled for Cape Town Stadium, but it seems it now has to be moved, with City’s second venue, Athlone Stadium, also not available. Comitis said that he thinks there are only “two” home games that City are still able to play at Cape Town Stadium this season.

The City owner added that the pitch at Athlone Stadium is not up to scratch, while City also do not have a decent pitch to train on.

“We usually train at Greenpoint on one of the rugby pitches but now there are all these festivals there … we are not being taken care of … we don’t have a training ground, it is a disaster and it looks like it will be like this for the next two months with the water crisis.

“At the moment we are using amateur club’s pitches (to train) but we go there and they are cabbage patches. This is a PSL team training on a cabbage patch.

“At the moment, things are not looking good, a year later I am being given the same spiel (by the city) and there is no better situation,” added Comitis.

“At some point I will have to think about what I am going to do with this franchise. At the end of the day how can you manage a professional club with no facilities. Maybe we must move it to where we are welcome, I understand now why Chippa moved (Chippa United relocated to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town in 2014).”
