City release Nigerian striker

Cape Town City have released Victor Obinna after the Nigerian striker failed to make an impact at the club.

Coach Benni McCarthy says club chairman John Comitis felt the former West Ham United and Inter Milan striker had to be released after scoring just one goal in 14 appearances in all competitions for City.

“Chairman John Comitis agreed with Victor from the beginning that we would do a review after six months and he didn’t feel that it was working for us‚” coach Benni McCarthy told TimesLIVE.

“There are no hard feelings between us. He understands.

“I felt he was getting fitter‚ better and stronger but I don’t think the chairman was convinced,” added McCarthy.

Obinna joined City in September last year after his contract at MSV Duisburg in Germany ended.

He was hoping to resurrect his career under the guidance of his former West Ham United teammate, but he failed to leave up to expectations at the Mother City-based club.
