City draw Sundowns in Nedbank Cup quarterfinals

Cape Town City's showdown with Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns was the plum tie pulled out of the proverbial hat at the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw in the Mother City on Thursday.

City have already beaten reigning league champions Bidvest Wits and Soweto giants Orlando Pirates en route to the last eight.

Benni McCarthy’s side will now host Masandawana at Cape Town Stadium in what promises to be a cracking encounter.

Sundowns won a league match against City at Athlone Stadium earlier this year, through a spectacular goal from Khama Billiat, though City did win in Tshwane earlier in the campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs will host Baroka FC in the last eight, a side who beat them at this stage of the competition in 2011, when they were playing in the Vodacom League.

Amakhosi did finally register their first win over Baroka in six attempts on January 21, Leonardo Castro netting the winner in a 2-1 victory away from home.

In the other quarterfinals, Fadlu Davids’ Maritzburg United will welcome Veselin Jelusic’s Bloemfontein Celtic, while the only lower league side left in the competition, the NFD’s Ubuntu Cape Town, will welcome Free State Stars.

It was also announced on Thursday evening that the 2018 Nedbank Cup final will be held at the Cape Town Stadium on May 19.

Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw:

Maritzburg United v Bloemfontein Celtic
Ubuntu Cape Town v Free State Stars
Cape Town City v Mamelodi Sundowns
Kaizer Chiefs v Baroka FC
