Chiefs coach Komphela rues wasted chances

The 50-year-old mentor was again left to “go back and look at where we went wrong” as Amakhosi fumbled to a goalless draw against Polokwane City on Tuesday night.

“We just have to go back and look at what we could have done better,” said Komphela in a post-match interview. “And what we always say … Pule (Ekstein) had a brilliant chance and also Shabba (Siphiwe Tshabalala). Those are small chances that count because if you get one or two in everything changes. But as things are now we just have to move on and keep giving reasons because there are no results,” a weary looking Komphela added.

To Komphela’s credit, there were a number of times his team could have done better with the chances they created but it was not to be. Even his tried, tested and trusted soldier Tshabalala was not at his best and most of his balls failed to reach their intended destination and he had to be replaced.

It was Shabba’s replacement though that raised a few eyebrows with some questioning the introduction of Edmore Chirambandare instead of someone more mobile like Bongolethu Jayiya.

“We always want to win every match. It is just a pity that we didn’t win this one. But we have to look forward there is nothing we can do about this match now as it is done and dusted,” said Komphela.

Polokwane City’s Bernard Molekwa said he was proud of how his players absorbed the pressure from Amakhosi and managed to secure a point.

“We knew Chiefs have been on song and playing very well so we were aware of the battle we had on our hands. I am proud of my boys for the hard work. They looked dangerous and threatening when on the ball,” said Molekwa.

“We didn’t create that many chances. I think we had two and (Itumeleng) Khune made good saves. They had better chances than us and I am happy to take this one point.”

Amakhosi’s next match is a Telkom Knockout clash against Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday, while Rise and Shine will do battle in the same tournament against the other Soweto giants Orlando Pirates on Saturday night.
