Chiefs coach Komphela calls for consistency

With just four points now separating his Kaizer Chiefs team from Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, Steve Komphela believes slip-ups should no longer happen as they would be detrimental in the league run-in.

Chiefs cut the deficit to four points following a well-earned 1-0 win over a resilient Cape Town City side at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Ryan Moon was again the hero, scoring in the second half to clinch the points. This was Moon’s fourth goal of the campaign and Komphela said he was happy with the youngster’s performances, having scored some vital goals.

“We did very well in the first half. They posed a few problems but we managed,” said Komphela after the match.

“We could have gone into half-time with a goal or two. We had a few chances.

“But we are happy with the three points. There are still nine matches to go. Benni (McCarthy) told me we are in a better position now, but they are also not out of it. They are just three points off the pace. There are still too many points to play for.

“That we are now four points off the top gives needed enthusiasm. The only time you can say it’s over is when it is mathematically impossible. We would love to win the championship but it won’t come easy. Anybody who slips now will find themselves missing out,” said Komphela.

Amakhosi’s next league match is against Bloemfontein Celtic at the FNB on Saturday night.

McCarthy admitted they didn’t deserve anything from Saturday’s match.

“I told the players at half-time to keep it tight. I told them we would concede from our own mistakes and we made one and with the form Ryan is in, he will finish you,” said McCarthy.
