Cardoso, however, also feels that Zwane could do with some experience in his Chiefs team if he is to end a long-running trophy drought.

The 34-year-old defender was with Chiefs for seven years, having joined from Free State Stars in July 2015.

He was released in July 2022 when his contract ended and henever won any silverware with the Naturena based side.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms, but youngsters are not going to win you titles and trophies,” said Cardoso, as quoted by SABC Sport.

“They are in a rebuilding phase, as you can see – (Samkelo) Zwane, (Mduduzi) Shabalala, (Happy) Mashiane, (Siyabonga) Ngezana… They got rid of all the experienced players,” explained Cardoso, who has become a big player in Brandon Truter’s team this season.

Cardoso made an example of Mamelodi Sundowns whom he believes have more experienced players, hence their success over the years.

Chiefs need experience to win trophies

“If you look at (Mamelodi) Sundowns’ team, there are experienced players, that’s why they win trophies season in, season out.

Zwane has a good foundation going on there (at Chiefs), but to win titles and trophies, I think you need far more experience, especially on the field.

“I mean, they have quite a few experienced players sitting in the stands and at home. And I think that is what has been missed.”

Cardoso will this weekend lead his Sekhukhune side when they meet Chiefs in a DStv Premiership match at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Chiefs are still in contention for the second spot in the league which will give them a ticket to play Caf Champions League football next season.

They are fourth on the standings with five games to the end of the season. Sekhukhune are in seventh place.

But with just six points between them and 15th placed Chippa United, they are statistically still in the relegation zone.

A win over Chiefs however can see entrench their place in the top eight.
