Broos didn’t have a proper plan to beat Ghana, claims ex-Bafana star

Following Bafana Bafana’s loss to Ghana in the World Cup qualifier this past weekend, Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has questioned Hugo Broos’ approach to the game.

Bafana lost 1-0 to the Black Stars on Sunday, courtesy of a controversial penalty that was awarded to Ghana and converted by Andre Ayew.

Vilakazi, who has over 30 international caps for South Africa, feels that with proper planning, Bafana could have easily won their game against Ghana.

“I’m very disappointed because we had it in our hands, but we gave it away. Ghana were there for the taking but we did not have a plan to beat them. I don’t know if we will have a chance like this in the future,” said Vilakazi during an online interview with iDiski TV.

“The coach’s (Hugo Broos) plan was not right for this game. I mean, you can’t start with (Ethan) Brooks in a game of this magnitude. He (Brooks) still has a long way to go before he is ready to start games like this. Looking at (Thibang) Phete as well. He has the experience and he is playing overseas, but he was exposed in some situations,” added the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder.

“Broos had a poor planning (for the Ghana game). We played against Ghana here (in South Africa) and we saw how poor they are. We should have won that game (the home game) by two to three goals, but that didn’t happen.

“We (Bafana) played long balls forward and Ghana were waiting for us to come at them and we made it easy for them. In the second half, Broos should have taken Brooks and Phete out and replaced them with (Mduduzi) Mdantsane and (Keagan) Dolly. I mean, we were a goal down and we had nothing to lose.

“Why did Dolly not start the game? Why did he start with Phete in the central midfield when he saw how badly he played there against Zimbabwe? The coach coach gave the match away to Ghana in my opinion,” commented Vilakazi.

Meanwhile, Vilakazi said that the South African Football Association (Safa) made a big mistake to give Broos a long term countries.

“From the first game that Broos has been in charge of Bafana, one could see that we don’t have a direction. Yes, Bafana were winning but we didn’t know how they won their games. It was a matter of time before we met opponents who’re better thinkers than us in terms of planning and that’s what happened tonight (Sunday),” concluded Vilakazi.
