Brockie plotting full points against Maritzburg

The Mamelodi Sundowns striker, often referred to as "The Sniper", says Downs need to win all of their games in hand in the Absa Premiership.

Jeremy Brockie has been in the game long enough to understand that it is foolhardy to get your calculators out and add points from games in hand, as they do not necessarily translate to games won.

The Mamelodi Sundowns striker, often referred to as “The Sniper”, says Downs need to win all of their games in hand in the Absa Premiership.

The defending champions are trailing leaders Bidvest Wits by eight points and have four games in hand.

“It is very difficult because games in hand do not mean maximum points. If we look at the table too much and see the gaps and read too much into the games in hand, that is when we are likely to slip up,” said Brockie.

“We just have to keep plotting our own way. We haven’t played in the league for a while now but we need to concentrate on collecting the points because one point isn’t really enough, especially with this schedule and with the travelling we have,” he added.

Sundowns take on Maritzburg United tomorrow night at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria as they look to return to winning ways after suffering a 2-1 defeat in Nigeria against Lobi Stars in the Caf Champions League.

Brockie did not make the long trip to Nigeria as he was suspended for the encounter. However, Brockie did not laze around in that period as he worked on his game.

“I made the most of the week leading up to tomorrow’s game while the boys were away, I was topping up because we have a busy January. If I am called up for the game, I am nice and ready and raring to go,” Brockie said before cautioning Sundowns against complacency against the struggling Team of Choice.

“They are not in such a good position so they can come here and express themselves. They are still a good team with quality players and if we take our foot off the pedal they are likely to punish us. It is important we get off to a good start and keep the pressure on the teams above us.

“We are going to make the most of these games in hand to keep climbing up the table.”
