Baroka pull off upset win over SuperSport

SuperSport found themselves trailing when conceding a penalty in the 23rd minute and Mduduzi Mdatsane converted the spotkick to hand Baroka a 1-0 lead.

The Pretoria team then rattled back in a desperate effort to get back on terms with Teboho Mokoena particularly prominent in the middle of the park. Evans Rusike had a great chance to level for SuperSport in the 31st minute, but fired his attempt at goal over the bar. Mokoena then tried his luck from a free-kick, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Two minutes into the second half, SuperSport equalised after Mxolisi Macuphu snuck in and finished neatly from close-in. Minutes later, the home side could have gone ahead, but Baroka goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze was equal to the task, saving brilliantly to deny Aubrey Modiba from a free-kick.

With SuperSport looking to win the match, they tried to find some inspiration from the bench, with Modiba and Mokoena replaced by George Lebese and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

But, instead of SuperSport taking the initiative, it was in fact Baroka who grabbed their opportunity when they took a 2-1 lead via a goal from Thato Madigoe in the 77th minute.

Soon after, in a game that was swinging from end to end, Rusike had a chance to square things for SuperSport, but again he hoofed his effort high and wide.

As a final throw of the dice, in a desperate bid to draw level, SuperSport brought on James Keen in place of Bradley Grobler 10 minutes from full-time.

But it was to no avail as SuperSport were unable to break Baroka down in the closing stages and the Polokwane-based team held on to register the win and the valuable three points.
