Banyana Banyana started their Aisha Buhari Cup campaign on a positive note after edging Ghana 3-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Nigeria on Friday.
Goals from Hilda Magaia, Thembi Kgatlana and Sibulele Holweni secured the victory for the South African ladies, as they took control the game over the Black Queens.
It was always going to be a difficult game for Banyana, but Desiree Ellis started with a very strong side, with the likes of Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane starting in front and midfield respectively.
Banyana, however, had a very good start with a good structure and they made things difficult for the West African outfit.
They only took 18 minutes to get into the score sheet, thanks to Magaia, who beat Ghana goalkeeper Fafali Dumahise, with a beautifully taken shot.
From then on, Ghana came through with Opoku Sonia and Aduba Princilla trying to create some attacks, but they weren’t fruitful.
South Africa also had some chances to extend the lead, but their chances went into waste, as they went into the break in the lead.
In the second half, the Ghanaians came in very strong, but the likes of Janine van Wyk and Kaylin Swart at the poles were well on guard.
Kgatlana, who has been very influential in the game finally put her name on the score sheet as the Atletico Madrid striker made it 2-0 for the South Africans took total control of the match.
Ellis’ troops weren’t done with the scoring, as substitute Holweni made it 3-0 for Banyana in the 83rd minute, sealing the victory for SA.
