Another fantastic display by Banyana Banyana saw the South Africans thrash Mozambique 6-0 in the return leg of the first round of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
Linda Motlhalo and Hilda Magaia each bagged a brace, while Bambanani Mbane and Sibulele Holweni scored one goal each.
The goals scored on the day saw Desiree Ellis go into the next stage of the qualifiers having secured a massive 13-0 aggregate victory over their counterparts, after winning the first leg 7-0 away from home in Maputo last week.
With the job looking all done and dusted from the first encounter, going into match, Ellis started with Regirl Ngobeni at goals, who made her first appearance for the senior national women’s team, while Asanda Hadede got her first start at left-back.
Within 10 minutes of play, Banyana were in the lead thanks to defender Mbane. It was 2-0 just 22 minutes later, as Motlhalo scored her third goal in two games before Magaia took the game into the break with the third goal for Banyana, while the visitors were still trying to find their feet.
It took only 10 minutes into the second half for Magaia to register her brace and fourth goal for Banyana and Motlhalo also followed suit making it 5-0 for the host nation in the 65th minute. The gap had become wider for Mozambique and there was no way they could stop the South Africans.
The hosts weren’t yet done with finding the back of the net as Holweni also registered her name on the scoresheet for the sixth goal for Banyana after coming off from the bench. There was literally nothing much Mozambique could do, as they played second fiddle to the South Africans for the entire game.
