Banyana defender looking forward to Ghana clash

Banyana Banyana defender Janine van Wyk knows coming up against Ghana is going to be a huge task, but believes they have a good team to compete when the teams face off in the Aisha Buhari Cup at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Nigera on Friday.

Van Wyk, a Glasgow City player in Scotland, says the team is fully focused on the challenge ahead and everyone in the team is raring to play in the first game, especially since the team hasn’t been together in a long time.

“I think we are ready and prepared for Ghana, I know we have not been in camp for a very long time. It is so nice to finally be together again, all the players are looking forward to our upcoming two games. But our focus is obviously on Ghana, which is our first game,” said the 34-year-old Banyana skipper on Thursday.

“I think they are a strong opponent we about to approach, but we also have very good depth in our team with experience and a mix of young talent coming through.”

Games against Ghana have always been very tough, with the Black Queens proving to be a difficult side for the South Africans to beat in the past. And with the high hot weather conditions in the West African country, Van Wyk adds that they have had to adapt to the situation in order to get ready for the match and the mood in the camp is high.

“So, it’s exciting to start the tournament, hopefully we can get a good result. But yeah, it’s hot here in Nigeria, we have to adapt as much as we can. But the team morale is high and everyone is excited for the game tomorrow (Friday).”
