Bafana play a waiting game as Fifa remain silent on Safa complaint

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams believes the South African Football Association have a “strong case” in their complaint to Fifa over the officiating in Bafana Bafana’s Group G Fifa World Cup qualifying defeat to Ghana on November 14.

A response from Fifa with regard to the complaint was expected this week, but thus far the world footballing body have remained tight-lipped on the matter.

Safa want a replay of the match, as they believe there was a clear pattern of bias from Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye and his assistants at the Cape Coast Stadium – Ghana won the match 1-0, via a debatable penalty, to make it into the final round of qualifying.

“We are waiting,” said Williams this week, at the launch of the Walter Sisulu Discovery Soccer Challenge.

“I think we have a very strong case. (Former referee) Ace Ncobo came up with an amazing analysis of the whole thing.”

Safa’s complaint has drawn a scathing response from the Ghana Football Association, but Williams reiterated that Bafana’s problem is not with the Black Stars.

“I saw the Ghanaian response, but we have no problem with Ghana, no problem with the FA or their players. They our our African brothers, many of them are playing overseas and we look up to them. We are playing a waiting game and hopefully we can get a replay.

“I think we were the better team throughout the group stages so to go out like that hurt. But that is where character is built and we need to stay focused and keep building.”
