Phakaaathi has learnt with sadness that the Team of Choice’s player Mlondi Dlamini died on Sunday afternoon in an accident on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal. It is not clear as yet where the accident happened.

“He was with his friend who was at Royal Eagles, his name is Happy (Mashau) but I can’t recall his surname now. They played together for Maritzburg’s MDC team last season. The latest information I have is that they both died,” said a source.

Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia confirmed to Phakaaathi that they have lost a player in a car accident but declined to name him as he was yet to speak to the family.

“Yes we have had that unfortunate situation again. We will issue a formal statement tomorrow (Monday) morning when I have spoken to his family,” said Kadodia.

A Royal Eagles player who spoke to Phakaaathi on condition of anonymity said they have been told that Mashau was in hospital but had not been informed that he had also passed on.

“We were told they were in an accident and the Maritzburg player died but Happy was in hospital. We have not heard anything further,” said the player.

Eagles chairman, Sbu Mpisane refused to comment and asked that we phone team manager James Dlamini whose phone was off at the time.
