AmaZulu edged closer to DStv Premiership safety on Wednesday as they fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with champions Sundowns at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
Ivorian Sede Dion scored a brilliant equaliser for Usuthu in the 84th minute, curling in from the edge of the box to earn the home side a valuable point.
Off the field, it has not been an easy week for AmaZulu, who have had to deal with criticism from former coaches Brandon Truter and Benni McCarthy.
On the pitch, however, Ayanda Dlamini’s side have moved up the table with four points out of six, beating Sekhukhune on the weekend before holding Sundowns, who have gone off the boil a little domestically since sealing the title.
With two games left to play in the season, AmaZulu are now in 11th, four points clear of 15th-placed Chippa United, who boosted their own hopes of survival with a 3-2 win at Richards Bay on Wednesday.
Rulani Mokwena’s Sundowns stormed into the Caf Champions League semifinals on the weekend, and looked in charge against AmaZulu from the moment Bongani Zungu capitalised on some poor Usuthu defending to slot in his first goal of the campaign.
Shalulile hits number 12
In the second half, Jody February did well to save from Themba Zwane, but was helpless as Lebo Maboe set up Peter Shalulile, the Namibian drilling in his 12th league goal of the season.
AmaZulu, however, found a way back into the game, as former Sundowns defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele nodded home from a corner before Dion curled in sublimely from the edge of the box.
