Amajita coach insists gold medal is within reach

It hasn’t been easy, but Amajita have shown their mettle at the Caf Under-20 Afcon in Niger, with the side qualifying for the 2019 Fifa World Cup and setting-up a meeting with Senegal in the semifinal at the Seyni Kouche Stadium in Niamey today.

With their World Cup spot booked, coach Thabo Senong is eager to see his side reach the final of the tournament and lifting the trophy.

Amajita had two draws and won one game in the group stage which saw them finish second in Group A with five points, thereby reaching the last four.

Meanwhile, Senegal finished at the summit of Group B, having won all of their games. Senong knows it will be another huge task for his charges to complete, but he is confident his team will give everything in their efforts to make it to the final.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure we achieve that goal because we really want to play in the final, but we are also well aware that the Senegal match is not going to be an easy one,”said the Amajita coach.

“We will have a look at how they play and come up with a proper plan to approach that game. We will fight to possibly go back home with the gold medal.”

One thing that has been impressive about Amajita at the competition is their defending. The team’s defence has managed to remain solid under pressure, while the same thing can’t be said about their fire-power up front. They have only scored two goals at the tournament, but Senong believes his charges can upset the odds and beat the young Teranga Lions.

“All of this can be achieved if we continue applying ourselves like we have done from the beginning of this tournament. I truly believe it can be done.

“I reckon the players will relax a bit now and turn it on because the first mission, qualifying for the World Cup, has been accomplished. Now we are gunning for gold,” he said.
