Former Cosmos star reminisces about his first stint in SA

Essau Kanyenda might have not played in the PSL for a long time, but the Malawian has some good memories during his stint with Jomo Cosmos from 2001 to 2003.

The former striker was a lethal goal-poacher during his time after being brought in to replace Benjamin Mwaruwari at the club, a task Kanyenda says was difficult looking at the mark Mwaruwari left at Ezenkosi.

“My time at Jomo Cosmos was very good and well. I came to replace Benjamin Mwaruwari, which was not easy considering that he left a mark. But lucky enough with my hard work and good communication with team-mates all went well,” Kanyenda reminisced.

“My time is SA was very great, though I didn’t stay that long. I enjoyed it with the help of the boss Jomo.”

Kanyenda reveals that his highlight at the club was after he won the Coca-Cola Cup with the team.

“The greatest moment was to win the Coca-Cola cup, where I was voted best player and I was the top goal-scorer too that season of 2001 to 2002.”

Kanyenda went on to ply his trade in Russia for Rostov FC, Lokomotiv Moscow and several other Russian clubs before returning to South Africa in 2012 to play for Polokwane City until 2017.
