Before signing Daniel Akpeyi, Kaizer Chiefs were interested in Polokwane City's George Chigova, Phakaaathi has learnt.

A source said Chiefs were close to signing the Zimbabwean keeper who has been City’s first choice.

“They used Willard Katsande as the middle man. He was the one talking to Chigova as they know each other from back home. But his demands were a deal-breaker as he wanted to be guaranteed the No.1 position before he signed. No club can do that and I think that was the deal-breaker,” said the source.

Chiefs then turned to Akpeyi who has become an integral part of the team and proved his detractors wrong with solid performances in Itumeleng Khune’s absence.
